Rugs are acquired in many different ways. One can inherit a rug or receive one as a gift from a friend. One can find older, used rugs at thrift stores, yard sales, online venues such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay.
Is the rug hand-woven or machine-made? Is it wool, silk, or cotton?
If wool, what is the quality of the wool? Is the wool hand-spun or machine-spun? Good-quality wool comes from sheep that live at higher altitudes and wears incredibly well. Poor quality wool obtained from butchered sheep does not.
Where was the rug woven? What is its potential retail value?
If you need to identify if the rug is a genuine hand-woven Oriental Rug or a machine-woven rug, here is my video on how to tell the difference.
These are the many questions that might be asked. If you purchase an Oriental rug at a rug gallery/store, the pertinent info should be on the tag or receipt, and the rug store merchant should be able to answer any of your questions.
As an Oriental Rug dealer for over 25 years, I am now offering the service of Oriental Rug Consultation. There are many countries and regions where hand-woven rugs are made, such as Iran, Afghanistan, China, Romania, Turkey, Pakistan, India, and the Caucasus.. There are new rugs, semi-antique rugs, and antique rugs. An antique rug is defined as over 100 years old.
If you have a rug or rugs you need more info on, please give me a call (707-823-3355) or email me at: afsharlady@aol.com
My consultation services are priced affordably.
Here is a recent testimonial from someone who inherited 13 rugs that contacted me!
I recently contacted Penny, the owner of Paradise Oriental Rugs, Inc., as I inherited thirteen rugs from my father. I believed these to be older Afghan carpets, as my grandfather was from Afghanistan and had been in the rug business.
Not being sure of their age, origin, region, or current value, I sought an expert in this area. After some research, I found Penny's site online and discovered her numerous YouTube videos.
Penny was able to inform me of the many aspects of these carpets and their current values. I am greatly pleased to have found such an experienced, knowledgeable, and informative person in this limited and unique discipline.
Thank you, Penny, for all!
